The Willapa Hills Trail State Route 6 Crossing Project provides a 10 foot wide, S-shaped pedestrian, bicyclist, and equestrian bypass bridge over the busy SR-6 Highway West of Chehalis, WA. With the trail crossing originally located on-grade near a bend in SR-6 and the roadway intersection of SR-6 and Stearns Road, the once dangerous crossing will now safely separate motor vehicle traffic from trail users with the pedestrian overpass, offering over 28 miles of continuous and safe trail access to users. Construction of the bypass includes a three-span weathering steel truss with a 10-foot wide concrete deck, 400 foot approaches to meet ADA 5% slope standards, safety railing/fencing along the bridge and approach, and an overlook area at the East end of the bridge providing views of the surroundings. Natural stone abutment wing walls will support the overlook area with mass grading required to build up the 20 foot tall, 400 foot long embankments with associated gabion baskets and reinforced slopes leading up to the bridge.
