The Knott Landfill – Cell 6 project provided much needed expansion volume for Deschutes County’s Department of Solid Waste in Bend, Oregon. Construction of an additional landfill cell at the Knott Landfill Recycling & Transfer Facility included excavating approximately 340,700 cubic yards of material to create 520,000 square feet of cell space. Of the 340,700 cubic yards of material excavated, 127,000 cubic yards required rock excavation utilizing drilling, blasting, and a hydraulic hammer. Utilizing excavated rock material, 100,000 cubic yards of aggregate was crushed on-site and stockpiled for future use. Additionally, construction of the landfill cell required the construction of four large embankments; placing special soil materials for cushioning and drainage; constructing leachate collection systems with pump stations; installing a special landfill gas piping system; placing 520,000 square feet of geomembrane; and constructing asphalt concrete access roads.
